Wedge Island WA: Locals Guide 2024

Wedge Island WA is a unique and picturesque destination, a few hours’ drive from Perth. This beautiful slice of paradise offers a variety of activities for both beach lovers and adventure seekers.

One of the unique aspects of Wedge is its quirky community of beach shacks. Nestled among the dunes, these charming beach abodes have a sense of nostalgia and a laid-back atmosphere. The community of shack dwellers contributes to the holiday vibe of the area.

Things to do in Wedge

With its pristine white sand stretching for miles along the Indian Ocean, Wedge has some of the most beautiful beaches in Western Australia. Whether you want to relax and soak up the sun or try sandboarding, there’s no shortage of beach activities.

Wedge Island Point Beach is the most accessible from Indian Ocean Drive. Stop on the way to Cervantes or as part of a Perth to Jurien Bay road trip. Most of the road is sealed, but the final section is beach sand.

This beach is popular with surfers and kite surfers, but it is not the best swimming beach as it is not patrolled.

We’ve seen people fishing off the beach and from boats off the coast; there were even some using what looked like drag nets.

For those seeking adventure, Wedge is the perfect place to explore with a four-wheel drive. Parts of the beach are easy to drive on as the sand is hard and compact (Point Beach). However, some parts, including the dunes, are challenging to navigate as the sand is very soft.

If you’re experienced at beach driving, you can take the beach run along the white sand from Lancelin, but the car can lean when driving. Many cars have toppled over or become bogged in the sand – only attempt it at low tide and if you are a confident beach driver.

Sandboarding is a popular activity in the sand dunes north of Point Beach. However, motorbikes are not permitted due to the number of accidents and people having to be airlifted to hospital.

Wedge Island: Conclusion

Now that the road to Wedge is sealed most of the way, it is easier to get to and worth the trip, especially if you are passing. We prefer getting there early before the sea breeze comes in as it can be extremely windy and the sand whips up and stings!

It’s a beautiful spot to pull up on the beach, get out your chairs, and relax.
