When you think of Broome, one image always comes to mind – the iconic camel trains silhouetted against the stunning sunsets of Cable Beach. It’s a quintessential Australian experience, and when I recently visited Broome, I knew I had to give it a go. After researching the different operators, I decided to book with Red Sun Camels, and let me tell you, it was an experience I won’t forget!

From the moment we arrived at the meeting point, the whole experience felt well-organised and professional. The Red Sun team were welcoming, and their passion for their camels was obvious. Having been on a few animal tours around the world, I always look out for how the animals are treated, and it was clear that these camels are very well cared for. That immediately put me at ease, especially since my daughters were just as excited (and a little nervous) as I was!

I opted for the presunset ride because I wasn’t sure how the experience would be and this is a shorter ride. However, the sunset ride is the most popular. The idea of gently swaying along the shoreline as the sun dips below the horizon sounds like the perfect way to end the day. (Tip: Book the sunset tour well in advance, as it tends to fill up quickly, especially during peak season!)

In this post, I’ll walk you through my experience, and share why I think this tour is a must-do for anyone visiting Broome.

The Red Sun Camels Experience

From the moment we arrived on Cable Beach, I knew we were in good hands with Red Sun Camels. The booking process had been a breeze, and on the day of our ride, everything ran seamlessly. The camel ride operators are easy to spot. From the main access point on Cable Beach, simply turn right at the rocks and look for the distinctive colours of Red Sun Camels with their signature red blankets. Just allow plenty of time to get there, as the tours are punctual and won’t wait if you’re late!

As we approached the meeting point, we were greeted by the friendly staff, who immediately made us feel welcome. My daughters were buzzing with excitement, and any initial nerves quickly faded as we watched the camels being carefully prepared. We were offered a complimentary drink of a beer, sparkling wine (thank you very much), or water.

Before the ride began, the team gave us a detailed safety briefing, explaining everything from how to mount the camels to the way they’ve trained their camels for smooth, safe rides. This extra touch really put my mind at ease, especially since we had little experience with camel rides. It was clear they prioritise both safety and comfort, which made the experience feel all the more relaxed.

The camels were brought alongside a utility vehicle, used as a loading platform to make it easier to get off and on the camels. I believe Red Sun Camels are the only operator to offer this at this stage. Soon it was our time to climb the steps onto the platform and wait for the camel to come alongside. It was an easy swing of the leg over, and off we went.

As soon as we were settled on our camels, I was struck by how gentle the ride felt. I had expected it to be a bit more jolting, but the camels moved at a calm, steady pace, making it easy to take in the breathtaking surroundings. Cable Beach stretched out endlessly before us, the white sand contrasting against the red rocks.

The guides were not only knowledgeable about the area and the camels, but they shared fascinating facts about the camels (did you know each one has its own personality?), and even took the time to snap a few family photos for us.

Red Sun Camels clearly takes pride in the care of their animals, and you could tell these camels were well looked after and loved by their handlers.

The Camels and Guides

One of the standout aspects of our Red Sun Camels experience was the genuine connection between the camels and their handlers. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that these camels were the stars of the show, each one with its own distinct personality. I was especially charmed by Alice, the gentle camel I rode, who had a calm and laid-back nature.

Having been on a few animal tours in the past, I always make it a point to observe how the animals are treated, and I’m happy to report that Red Sun Camels excels in this area. The camels were clearly well-cared-for, and the bond between them and their handlers was heartwarming to see. They were patient, calm, and moved at a steady, comfortable pace, making the whole experience feel safe and enjoyable.

The guides themselves were fantastic. Throughout the ride, they shared interesting facts about the camels, from their unique personalities to the history of camel riding in Broome. I learned that some of these camels have been with Red Sun for many years, and it shows in the way they interact with both the guides and the guests.

Pros and Cons of Red Sun Camels

After experiencing the pre-sunset camel ride, it’s easy to see why they’re one of the top-rated camel tour operators in Broome. Like any tour, though, there are always a few points to consider. Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons based on my personal experience.

Pros

  • Well-Cared-For Camels: One of the highlights for me was seeing how well the camels were treated. As someone who values ethical animal tourism, it was reassuring to witness the strong bond between the camels and their handlers. These animals are clearly loved and well looked after, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
  • Stunning Scenery: There’s no better way to take in the breathtaking views of Cable Beach than from atop a camel. Whether you opt for a morning ride or the iconic sunset tour, the setting is absolutely magical. The beach stretches out endlessly, and the sky’s vibrant colours during sunset are unforgettable.
  • Knowledgeable Guides: The guides were friendly, approachable, and full of fascinating information about the camels and the area. They were happy to share stories, fun facts, and tips about Broome, which really added to the experience.
  • Perfect for All Ages: This is an experience that suits most people, from couples wanting a romantic sunset ride to families with kids. My daughters were a little nervous at first, but the guides made sure they were comfortable, and soon enough, they were loving every minute.
  • Smooth Booking Process: Booking with Red Sun Camels was straightforward and hassle-free. I managed to secure our tour online without any trouble, and we received clear instructions on where to meet and what to expect.

Cons

  • Tours Fill Up Fast: The sunset tour is incredibly popular, and for good reason. But that means if you don’t plan ahead, you might miss out. I recommend booking well in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure you get a spot on your preferred ride.
  • Price: While the experience is absolutely worth it, the tours aren’t cheap. For families, especially, it can add up. That being said, you’re paying for a well-rounded, high-quality experience, and the memories are priceless.
  • Limited Tour Times: Depending on when you visit Broome, tour times can be a bit limited. The sunset ride is the most popular, and the earlier morning rides may not fit everyone’s schedule.

Overall, the pros far outweigh the cons when it comes to Red Sun Camels. The quality of care for the camels, the knowledgeable guides, and the breathtaking scenery make this a must-do experience in Broome. Just ensure to book early and budget accordingly for an unforgettable adventure!

Comparisons to Other Camel Ride Operators

When it comes to camel rides on Cable Beach, you’ll find a few different operators to choose from, but after my experience with Red Sun Camels, I can say that I was happy with my choice.

Pricing and Value for Money

When considering whether to book a camel ride on Cable Beach, one of the first questions that comes to mind is: Is it worth the price? With Red Sun Camels, I can confidently say yes, although it’s important to know what you’re paying for and why the experience is priced the way it is.

Pricing is fairly standard compared to other operators in Broome. For example, the sunset ride, which is their most popular option, typically costs around $120 per adult and $80 per child (prices can vary slightly depending on the season). They also offer shorter pre-sunset rides for a lower price, so if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option.

Now, at first glance, these prices might seem a bit steep, especially for families. But when you break down the experience, it’s easy to see where the value comes from. The staff are incredibly attentive, the camels are well-cared-for, and the guides go out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable, safe, and entertained throughout the journey.

The scenery alone is worth the price. Seeing the famous Cable Beach sunset while riding a camel is something you really can’t put a price on – it’s one of those “only in Australia” moments that will stay with you long after your holiday. Whether you’re a keen photographer, a nature lover, or just someone who appreciates a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime experience, this tour delivers on all fronts.

Tip: If you’re travelling on a budget, consider the pre-sunset ride, which offers a similar experience at a lower cost, minus the sunset views.

The attention to detail, care for the camels, and the knowledgeable guides all contribute to making this a standout experience.

Whether you’re travelling as a couple, with family, or even solo, this is an experience you won’t want to miss. I recommend booking your tour well in advance, especially if you’re eyeing the popular sunset ride, as spots can fill up quickly, particularly during peak season.
