Day 1: Arrival and Exploring Kalbarri’s Coastal Wonders

After arriving in Kalbarri, I always like to start my day with some fresh air and stunning views, and there’s no better way to do that than heading straight to the coastal cliffs. Kalbarri’s dramatic coastline is famous for its rugged beauty, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to soak it all in right away.

Morning: Coastal Cliffs and Chinaman’s Beach

First up, the Kalbarri National Park Coastal Cliffs. I recommend starting at Red Bluff, where the cliffs rise dramatically from the ocean, offering breathtaking views. It’s a great spot for photography, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch sight of dolphins or whales depending on the season. Another must-see stop is the Natural Bridge, where the rock formations have been sculpted by wind and waves over millions of years. Wear comfortable shoes as there’s a bit of walking, but it’s mostly easy-going with plenty of lookout points to rest and take photos.

For a more relaxed vibe, head to Chinaman’s Beach. This is one of my favourite spots for a peaceful morning stroll or a refreshing dip. The beach is sheltered and perfect for a swim, especially if you have kids.

Local Tip: Bring sunscreen and a hat – there’s not much shade along the cliffs, and the sun can get quite strong, even in the cooler months. Also, pack plenty of water as there aren’t many places to refill once you’re out exploring.

Lunch: A Coastal Bite

After all that fresh air, I recommend stopping for lunch at The Gorge Cafe or find other places to eat in Kalbarri.

Afternoon: Kalbarri Skywalk and Scenic Trails

In the afternoon, it’s time to head to the Kalbarri Skywalk, one of Kalbarri’s newest attractions. The Skywalk offers panoramic views over the Murchison River Gorge, and it’s simply jaw-dropping. I remember the first time I stood on the Skywal. It feels like you’re floating above the gorge, with the river winding below and the rich red rock formations stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s an unforgettable experience and a perfect spot for those stunning Instagram photos.

If you have the energy, I suggest taking a short hike in Kalbarri National Park. There are several trails that offer beautiful views without taking up too much of your time.

Local Tip: The Skywalk can get busy, especially in the middle of the day, so I recommend visiting in the early afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds. Don’t forget to take your time walking along the platforms to fully appreciate the views.

Evening: Sunset and Dinner at Finlay’s

As the sun starts to set, head back towards town and stop at Red Bluff or the Kalbarri Foreshore for some incredible sunset views. The red cliffs glow with the soft evening light, and it’s a peaceful way to wrap up the day.

For dinner, Finlay’s Kalbarri is a local institution. It’s a casual, family-friendly spot with an outdoor beer garden and plenty of fresh seafood. The vibe is laid-back, and it’s perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. I always go for their seafood linguine. You can’t go wrong with any of their dishes, though!

Local Tip: Finlay’s can get busy, especially on weekends, so it’s a good idea to get there early or book ahead if you can. The outdoor seating is lovely, especially when the weather is mild, so try to grab a spot outside if possible.

Day 2: Adventure and Relaxation in Kalbarri

After a good night’s rest, Day 2 is all about balancing a bit of adventure with some well-earned relaxation. Kalbarri offers plenty of both, so you can tailor the day to your pace, whether you’re up for an early morning hike or prefer a leisurely start with a riverside coffee.

Early Morning: Murchison River Gorge or Water Adventures

If you’re an early riser like me, there’s no better way to kick off the day than with an adventure in the Murchison River Gorge. The Z-Bend lookout and trail are stunning in the morning light, with the red cliffs illuminated by the rising sun. If you’re up for it, take the Z-Bend River Trail. It’s a bit more challenging, with some rock scrambling, but it leads down to the riverbed, and it’s well worth the effort. The peacefulness of the river in the morning, surrounded by towering gorge walls, is truly something special.

For those who prefer water activities, consider starting your day with a paddle on the Murchison River. You can rent kayaks or join a guided canoe tour, and it’s a great way to explore the river at a slower, more relaxing pace. I love how peaceful the river is in the early hours, with birds chirping and the sun just starting to warm the day.

Local Tip: If you’re hiking, go early to beat the heat, especially in summer. Bring plenty of water, and don’t forget a hat.

Late Morning: Pelican Feeding and a Relaxing Break

Once you’ve had your fill of adventure, head back to town for the Kalbarri Pelican Feeding at 8:45 AM. This quirky, family-friendly event is held daily at the foreshore, and it’s a fun way to get up close with these friendly locals.

Afterward, take a break and enjoy a coffee or brunch at Little Leaf Kalbarri. This charming café is a personal favourite of mine, with its laid-back atmosphere and delicious food. I highly recommend their smashed avocado or a fresh smoothie bowl. The staff are super friendly, and it’s a great place to relax and watch the world go by. Plus, their outdoor seating is perfect for soaking up some sunshine.

Local Tip: The pelican feeding gets quite popular, so get there a little early if you want a good spot to watch. Little Leaf Kalbarri can also be busy around brunch time, so if you’re in a rush, grabbing a takeaway coffee is a good option too!

Afternoon: Kalbarri River Cruise or Adventure Activities

In the afternoon, you have a few great options depending on how adventurous or relaxed you’re feeling.

For those craving more adventure, Kalbarri offers plenty of adrenaline-pumping activities. If you didn’t get enough of the gorges yesterday, try abseiling in the national park. There are options for all levels, and nothing beats the thrill of descending the towering cliffs of the Murchison River Gorge. Another option is quad biking which offers off-road adventures, letting you explore more of Kalbarri’s rugged landscape.

If you’re looking to wind down, I recommend a scenic Sunset Kalbarri River Cruise. It’s a wonderfully relaxing way to spend a couple of hours, gliding along the Murchison River while taking in the views and spotting local wildlife like kangaroos, pelicans, and maybe even a wedge-tailed eagle or two. It’s a fantastic way to see Kalbarri from a different perspective, and the guides are always full of interesting stories about the area.

Local Tip: If you’re keen on the river cruise, book ahead, especially during peak season.

Evening: Farewell Dinner

If you’re not in a rush to get home, there are plenty of casual spots in town to grab a bite, whether it’s a burger or something more substantial.
