Planning Your Trip to Exmouth

Taking an adventure to Exmouth requires some planning to make the most of your visit to this spectacular corner of Western Australia. These are my tips to help you plan your trip:

Best Time to Visit

Exmouth experiences a warm, semi-arid climate, making it a great year-round destination. However, the best time to visit largely depends on what you want to do:

  • March to July is ideal for swimming with whale sharks, as these gentle giants migrate through Ningaloo Reef during these months.
  • August to October offers excellent conditions for humpback whale watching and enjoying the wildflower blooms across the Cape Range National Park.
  • The Australian summer months (December to February) can be scorching but are good if you’re looking to escape the cold from other parts of the world, but remember to stay hydrated and protected from the sun. It is also wet season and from November to April cyclones are a possibilty.

Accommodation Options

Exmouth accommodation caters to a range of preferences and budgets, from luxury resorts to backpacker hostels and campgrounds. Whether you prefer the comfort of a beachside villa or the adventure of camping under the stars, you’ll find suitable accommodation. Booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak seasons like the whale shark migration period.

Getting to Exmouth

  • By Air: Learmonth Airport is the main gateway about 36 kilometres south of Exmouth. Direct flights are available from Perth; from there, you can rent a car or take a shuttle bus to Exmouth.
  • By Road: If you’re up for a road trip, Exmouth is approximately 1,250 kilometres north of Perth.

Car Hire – To compare rental car company prices, I use Discover Cars, an award-winning car rental comparison website. They offer competitive pricing in over 10,000 locations worldwide and are have a high rate of customer satisfaction.

Tip: The earlier car rentals are booked, the cheaper it is with more choice of vehicles.

Local Transportation

While Exmouth is a small town, having your own transport is beneficial, especially to access remote areas within Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park. Car and camper van rentals are available, and there are also guided tour options that include transport to and from your accommodation.

Tips for Visitors

  • Respect the Environment: The beauty of Exmouth’s natural surroundings is breathtaking, and it’s crucial to minimise our impact. Follow guidelines for responsible tourism, especially in protected areas like Ningaloo Reef.
  • Stay Hydrated and Sun-Safe: The Australian sun can be intense, so always carry water, wear sun protection, and seek shade during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Be Prepared for Remote Areas: Some attractions are in remote locations with limited services. When exploring, it’s wise to carry essentials like water, food, and a first-aid kit.
