The Weather Factor
Summer (December to February)
Summer in Kalbarri is hot and dry, often reaching temperatures above 30°C. If you’re a beach bum, this is the time for you. But, for hiking enthusiasts, the heat might be too much to handle.
Autumn (March to May)
Autumn is my personal favourite. The weather is mild, making it ideal for most outdoor activities, from hiking to water sports. Evenings can get cooler, so pack some layers. Kalbarri can be very windy, so this time of the year is popular due to little wind.
Winter (June to August)
Winter brings cooler and sometimes wet conditions. It’s a quieter time to visit, perfect if you’re looking to escape the crowds. However, water sports and certain outdoor activities might be off the table.
Spring (September to November)
Spring is another great option as it’s whale watching season. The weather warms up, and wildflowers are blooming. It can get busy, though, so book your accommodation well in advance.
Activity-Specific Recommendations
Hiking and Land Adventures
The best time for hiking in Kalbarri National Park is during the autumn months. Trails like The Loop and Nature’s Window are perfect during this season.
Water Sports
For water activities like snorkelling and kayaking, summer and autumn are your best bets. The water is pleasantly warm, and the conditions are generally calm.
Wildlife Spotting
If you’re keen on wildlife, spring is when you’ll find an array of birds and marine life. Whale-watching is particularly good during this time.
Family Activities
For families, especially those with school-age children, the spring and summer school holidays are excellent.
Fishing
Fishing is fruitful almost all year round. If you’re targeting specific fish like Dhufish or Snapper, the warmer months are better.
Cost Considerations
Prices for Kalbarri accommodation and activities can surge during peak seasons like summer and spring. Planning and booking ahead can save you money.
My Thoughts
Kalbarri is a destination that has something to offer everyone all year round. But a well-timed visit based on your interests – hiking, water sports, or wildlife spotting – can elevate your experience.
Flies can be a problem in a lot of places in WA. They are usually worse in spring and summer, after rain. I visited in April and only had a few; however, that doesn’t always mean they won’t be around. I recommend buying a flynet and some insect repellent. You may think you don’t want to look silly, but believe me, you won’t care once you’ve experienced flies at their worst.
