As Perth residents, we visit Margaret River on a regular basis, as a family and as a couple.

Day one starts in Margaret River, so stop at the Busselton Jetty (the longest timber-piled jetty in the southern hemisphere) and its underwater observatory on the way to or from Maragret River. If you’re up for some adventure, the Forest Adventures South West is a lot of fun for all the family.

Day 1 of your 5 days in Margaret River Itinerary: Wineries, Culture & Delights

Morning: Margaret River Tour

Start your day with an enriching experience by joining a tour to kick off your stay in the stunning Margaret River region. You can choose between classic winery tours or something unique, like the Margaret River Discovery Tour or the Koomal Dreaming Cultural Tour

The Margaret River Discovery Tour will take you off the beaten path, revealing the area’s hidden gems and natural wonders. On the other hand, the Koomal Dreaming Cultural Tour offers an immersive Aboriginal cultural experience, where you can learn about indigenous history, bush tucker, and traditional practices.

Morning Alternative: Hike & Wine Tasting

Start the day by hiking on one of the many trails in Margaret River or walking part of the Cape to Cape track.

After, visit some of the most renowned wineries in the Margaret River Wine Region. Try the esteemed Voyager Estate, known for its elegant architecture and exceptional premium wines. Continue your wine journey to Cullen Wines or Cape Mentelle, an iconic winery known for its innovative winemaking techniques. Other popular wineries include Leeuwin Estate, Wills Domain, and Windows Estate.

Consider booking lunch at one of the wineries or visit a family-friendly brewery.

Afternoon: Margaret River Chocolate Factory & Cowaranup

Indulge your sweet tooth and visit the Margaret River Chocolate Factory to sample decadent chocolates, truffles, and other delectable treats. Then make your way to Cowaranup. This charming town is known for its friendly atmosphere and cow sculptures. Explore the local shops, galleries, and cafes, or enjoy a beer at Cowaramup Brewery.

Evening: Dinner in Margaret River

Margaret River township has some great venues for dinner – one of our favourites is Margaret River Brewhouse. The Settlers Tavern is child-friendly, and Morries is a lovely place for cocktails and tapas.

Day 2 of your 5 days in Margaret River Itinerary:  Nature, Caves, & Coast

Early Morning: Hamelin Bay

Arrive in Hamelin Bay early for your best chance to witness the incredible sight of graceful stingrays gliding through the shallow waters. These gentle creatures often come close to the shore, creating a magical and unique opportunity for interaction. Remember to respect their space and observe from a distance to ensure their safety and yours.

Morning: Cape Leeuwin

Head to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse in the picturesque coastal town of Augusta, the meeting point of the Southern and Indian Oceans. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the expansive ocean stretching into the horizon.

Afternoon: Margaret River Caves & Boranup Forest

In the afternoon, explore one of the fascinating limestone caves beneath the Margaret River region. Jewel Cave is an underground wonder adorned with intricate formations and impressive chambers. Guided tours provide insights into this stunning cave’s geological history and delicate beauty. This is our favourite of the Margaret River caves.

Lake Cave, known for its stunning suspended tableaux and tranquil reflecting pool, is also beautiful. As you walk along the suspended bridge, the views of the reflections are mesmerising. 

Family Option: If you have young children, Mammoth Cave is a self-guided tour, allowing you to view the cave at your own pace. This would suit kids that may find guided tours restrictive.

As you drive from Augusta to the caves and Margaret River, take in the enchanting Boranup Forest, a magnificent expanse of towering karri trees. The dappled sunlight makes it an ideal spot for a stroll or a photo session.

Day 3 of your 5 days in Margaret River Itinerary: Beaches, Lighthouse, & Sunset Magic

Today’s adventure begins with a visit to the stunning Geographe Bay beaches, offering a relaxing start to your morning – head to Meelup Beach, where pristine white sands meet the bay’s crystal-clear waters. Take a refreshing dip, bask in the sun’s warmth, or stroll along the coastline. 

If you want to learn to surf, book a lesson with Margaret River Surf School who provide individual and group lessons on one of the Margaret River beaches, usually Redgate Beach.

Continue your coastal exploration by heading to Castle Rock, Eagle Bay or Bunker Bay. These exquisite beaches offer a picturesque blend of turquoise waters and dramatic coastal landscapes. Spend your time swimming, beachcombing, or unwinding under the shade of swaying trees – a true paradise for nature lovers.

For a dose of history and breathtaking panoramic views, book a tour of Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse. Climb to the top and take in the spectacular views of the Indian Ocean. Learn about the lighthouse’s rich maritime history and its vital role in guiding ships safely along the rugged coastline.

After lunch, go to Sugarloaf Rock for stunning views of the granite rock and the surrounding coastline. It’s beautiful during the day but magical at sunset, so consider returning to watch the sun dip below the horizon.

End the day with dinner in Dunsborough or have an early bite to eat before heading to Sugarloaf Rock.

Day 4 of your 5 days in Margaret River Itinerary: Nature’s Beauty, Marine Wonders, & Family Fun

Morning: Yallingup Aquarium & Canal Rocks

Start your day by walking along the Cape to Cape track to find the Yallingup Aquarium, an excellent snorkel and swimming spot with crystal-clear water. 

Spend the rest of your morning marvelling at Canal Rocks, a natural wonder showcasing the beauty of the region’s coastline. These striking rock formations create a series of channels carved by the relentless ocean waves. The sight of the waves crashing against the rocks is a captivating display of nature’s power.

Family Option: If you’re travelling with kids, they’ll love the Yallingup Maze. Lose yourselves in the twists and turns of this charming maze, offering both fun and a dash of challenge. Alternatively, you can opt for the Ngilgi Cave, where you can explore stunning limestone formations and learn about the cave’s rich history through semi-guided tours.

It’s time to treat your taste buds! Make your way to Swings & Roundabouts, one of our favourite wineries known for its exceptional wines and delicious wood-fired pizzas. Indulge in the perfect pairing of gourmet pizza and a glass of their finest wine. There’s a playground to keep the kids occupied while you take in the gorgeous vineyard view.

Evening: Caves House Hotel

Wrap up your day with dinner at heritage-listed Caves House Hotel in Yallingup, with its vintage charm and warm, inviting atmosphere.

Day 5 of your 5 days in Margaret River Itinerary: Day of Exploration

Morning: Margaret River Beaches

Start your day by walking along one of Margaret River’s beautiful beaches. Feel the sand between your toes and the salty breeze in your hair as you stroll along the beach, taking in the breathtaking coastal views. 

After working up an appetite, it’s time for a hearty breakfast. We love White Elephant Café at Gnarabup Beach, which has a picturesque setting overlooking the sparkling ocean.

Mid-Morning: Prevelly

For those seeking the thrill of the waves, visiting Prevelly is a must. This surfers’ paradise is a hub for riding the waves and soaking up the beach vibes. Even if you’re not a surfer, the energy and enthusiasm of the surfing community are infectious, making it a great spot to watch the action and embrace the laid-back coastal lifestyle.

Afternoon: Wilyabrup

Discover a hidden treasure that tourists often overlook: Wilyabrup. This lesser-known section of the Cape to Cape Track has a unique opportunity to connect with nature without committing to the entire hike. To find it, type “Wilyabrup Climbing and Abseiling Sea Cliffs” into Google Maps. 

Family Option: Take the kids mountain biking on one of the many trails in Margaret River.

Margaret River is in Western Australia’s South West. To reach this captivating destination from Perth, you have a few options:
